Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea
Unpublished Comic Art

The artwork pictured at right was intended to grace the cover of a new series of Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea comic books.  Spectrum Comics (one of the first independent comic book companies) was in the negotiating stages to acquire Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea as a monthly comic title.
As a result, Artist Steve Woron worked up a series of drawings in late 1983, of which, this is one.  This particular piece was to be inked and used as an inside cover frontpiece for the first Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea issue.  Unfortunately, the rights were never acquired, the series never came to be, and this artwork remained in Woron's vaults until recently rediscovered and sold on ebay.

Below is a very interesting work by Mr. Woron.  As he explained when selling the piece on ebay: Growing up as a kid, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea was my favorite TV show and held a special place in my childhood's heart. Spectrum Comics was in the negotiating stages to acquire Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea as a monthly comic title some 15 years after Gold Key went under.  As a result, I worked up a (long forgotten) series of drawings as samples.

comic_woron_seaview2.jpg - 49930 Bytes    This particular piece was to be as a design idea for the NEW SEAVIEW II (Sovereign Class) with NEW Walking FLYING SUB II.  My proposed storyline was to begin the series with the new Seaview II and tell the story in the past tense as to how the first Seaview was lost.  In order to take the storyline to this drastic a change, Irwin Allen would have to approve the new Seaview II design.  Sovereign Class) with NEW
Walking FLYING SUB II (See my notes to Mr. Allen in the margins...)  There were several stapled notes from his office offering suggestions, but generally, they really liked the concepts.  The notes have long been lost.  My vision of the Seaview II was a similar design but much more armed sub with an dramatic increase in size, speed and armament.
