Seaview's
sick bay was a stainless steel wonder. There were rows of brilliant metal
shelves crammed with the most up-to-date medical equipment available
loaded with enough multi-colored flashing lights, dials and switches, to
assure even the most paranoid hypochondriac. None of this registered
with Matt Reynolds, who lay flat on his back, unconscious and bound by
security restrictions in the darkened recovery room just off Main Medical.
Lee Crane spoke with the ship's
doctor in hushed tones. "Can you tell me anything about his
condition Doc?"

"Not really,
Captain. I haven't had the opportunity to do anything other
than monitor his blood pressure and take his temperature, both of
which are high. Probably side effects of being stunned.
You say he acted like he was out of his head?"
"Completely out of his head. He was crazed. He
came at me with death in his eyes and a big
spanner clenched in his fist. Either he didn't recognize me and
thought I was a threat, or my stock's gone down. Big time! I
think he was trying to kill me, and might have, if

let him have it. I want to know why, Doc. It was totally
unprovoked." "Hmmm. You're going to have to
give me some time to do a work-up. There's nothing in Reynold's medical
history or file to indicate instability or any disorder. We've done
a quick poll of the crew, and there are no reports of anything unusual in
Reynolds' recent behavior, other than a few odd dreams. It's a
mystery to me, Captain. At least for the time being. I'll try
to get you some answers soon." "Thanks Doc," Crane
said. "If you come up with anything, have Sparks get hold of
me. I'll be in the Admiral's quarters. And for now at least,
I'm having a security guard posted outside sick bay. Just in case."
Doc gave Crane a look of mock disapproval.
"Get out of here, SIR." The Captain left, and true to his word,
ordered one of Sharkey's armed security men to take up station outside
sick bay. He remembered the crazed look in Matt Reynolds's eyes when
Matt had attacked. Crane couldn't get the image out of his
mind. He never wanted to see that look again
