Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea
Effects--Deadly Creature Below

Production Art, The Condemned
The genesis of the underwater plant/animal monster from season one's black & white episode, "The Condemned"--the pre-production drawing at left evolved into the monster that appeared on-screen as pictured below.  Often, the production drawings were more ambitious than the final creation (usually due to budget limitations).

Sure I'd prefer an Oreo cookie, but you take what you can get. Another brilliant miniature effects shot in the making.
As mentioned above, the creature seen here was actually created for season one's black & white episode "The Condemned" in which it performed more function than simply wreaking havoc.  As with most season one episodes, the story actually focused on the foibles of its human characters; the creature serving as a 'bear' to precipitate the show's crisis rather than being the story itself.  The monster as pictured immediately above left and below as it appeared in year two's "Deadly Creature Below".  It was this episode that GAF chose as the basis for its Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea Viewmaster set titled "Escape."  Inset shows effects crew working with camera on the dry side of the glass in the green tank.  Above right, another great miniature effects shot in the making.

Eight months after appearing in season one's "The Condemned," it turned up in the Lost in Space episodes, "The Keeper," (Parts 1 & 2),  and then came back for season two's "Deadly Creature Below".  I'm sure it made several other appearances as well.
